Free & Reduced Mont Saint-Michel Tickets

Information on free and reduced-price entry to Mont Saint-Michel Abbey for various visitors.

Mont Saint-Michel has a broader free-entry and reduced-price policy than most visitors realise. The village itself and the bay are always free to walk through, all under-18s and EU residents under 26 enter the abbey free, and the first Sunday of every month from October to March is also free for everyone. See our visitors guide and accessibility page for related information.

Who gets a discount

The standard reduced rate (around €9 at the CMN counter) applies to certain large-family card holders (carte famille nombreuse) and some other specific categories — check the CMN site for the current full list. Most international visitors will either pay the full adult rate of €13 (skip-the-line voucher) or qualify for the free EU-resident under-26 rate.

How to claim a free or reduced ticket

Children under 18: Book a free child ticket via the official ticketing flow — you still need a ticket so the abbey can manage capacity. Bring ID with date of birth (passport or national ID) to show at the entrance.

EU residents 18–25: Book a free EU-resident young-visitor ticket via the official flow. Bring ID with EU nationality (passport, national ID card) or French residence permit. The ID is checked at the entrance.

Disabled visitors: Pick up a free ticket at the abbey ticket counter on arrival — bring your French CMI (carte mobilité inclusion), MDPH document, or equivalent foreign disability documentation. The companion ticket is issued at the same time.

Teachers / jobseekers / ICOM members: Bring your valid professional card or Pôle Emploi attestation to the abbey ticket counter on arrival.

Free Sundays (October–March): No reservation needed but the abbey is exceptionally busy on free days — arrive at 09:30 sharp to avoid the worst crowds. The ticket counter still has a queue (the ticket is free but you need one to enter).

Bring proof: ID with date of birth for under-26 categories, residence permit for non-EU France-residents, professional card for teachers / ICOM, Pôle Emploi attestation for jobseekers, disability card for free admission. Staff at the entrance check randomly — having proof on you avoids any awkward conversations.

Free & Reduced FAQ

Eligibility, documents, and edge cases

Do children really enter free?
Yes — all under-18s worldwide enter free, regardless of nationality. You still need a free ticket for capacity management. Bring ID with date of birth.
Is there a free day for everyone?
Yes — the first Sunday of every month from 1 October to 31 March is free for all visitors, regardless of nationality or age. The abbey is exceptionally busy on these days; arrive at opening for the best experience.
Do students get a discount?
EU-resident students under 26 enter free with valid ID — this is a free rate rather than a discount. Non-EU students over 18 do not qualify for the free rate; they pay the standard adult fare unless they hold ICOM, teacher or jobseeker documentation.
Are seniors discounted?
No — unlike some other French monuments, Mont Saint-Michel does not offer a senior discount as a standalone category. Seniors pay the standard €13 adult fare unless they qualify under another category (disability, ICOM membership, etc.).
Can carers enter free?
Yes — one companion of a disabled visitor is admitted free, and the disabled visitor themselves also enters free with a valid disability card. See our accessibility page for the document list.
Is there a family ticket?
Not in the form of a single combined ticket — but since all under-18s are already free, a typical family of 2 adults + 2 or 3 children pays only for the adults. The carte famille nombreuse (French large-family card, 3+ children) gives a reduced rate to the adults.
What documents are accepted as ID?
Passports, national ID cards (EU), French residence permits (titres de séjour) for non-EU France-residents under 26, French CMI / MDPH cards for disability, Pass Education for French teachers, Pôle Emploi attestation for jobseekers, ICOM or ICOMOS cards for museum professionals.
Is the Pass Patrimoine accepted?
Yes — the CMN annual pass (Pass Patrimoine, around €50/year, free for under-26 EU residents) covers Mont Saint-Michel Abbey alongside many other French national monuments. Worth doing the maths if you're visiting 3+ CMN sites in a year.
